Our Mission
Our mission is to Love God, Grow in Faith, and Serve the Lord.
For every person who is part of the Mt. Olivet UMC family, our desire is that we will “exalt Jesus Christ by making disciples who Love Jesus, Grow with others, and Serve the world.”
Love Jesus
God loves us more than we can begin to imagine! Getting to know Jesus and growing in love for him is the greatest pursuit in life; nothing is more important. “Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind and with all your strength” (Mark 12:30).
Grow in Faith
We grow best in company with other Christians. “For where two or three gather in my name, there am I with them.” (Matthew 18:20)
Serve the Lord
To serve is to follow the example of Jesus, who “did not come to be served, but to serve” Mark 10:45. We pass along the good news of his forgiveness to people in our workplaces, neighborhoods, schools, and other places we frequent. And we partner together to get the good news of Jesus’ love to people in every nation of the world.
Everything we do as a church is driven by one of these three things.
Our History
Since 1855, Mount Olivet UMC has been offering a place to gather for those looking for guidance and those wanting to praise the Lord’s name on the hilltop. The first structure was built in the midst or Mount Olivet cemetary. Sixty years after an improvement in 1899, a new church was erected in what is now the current location, on Route 88.
On April 16, 2006, the first worship service was held in the new and improved Mount Olivet UMC after a new and needed addition was added to the original structure.
Once you walk through our front doors, you can’t help but notice God’s presence in our sanctuary. Our church welcomes everyone, providing space for meetings, studying the scriptures, and fellowship. We promise to enrich your relationship with God.
Our Services
At Mt. Olivet United Methodist Church, we absolutely love celebrating different worship styles and schedules. Our services are designed to fit in perfectly with everyone’s busy lives. When you come to Mt. Olivet UMC, you’ll find a wonderful mix of traditional and contemporary elements in our worship, and we warmly welcome everyone. So, feel free to join us just as you are, whether you’re in jeans, khakis, suits, or tennis shoes. Looking forward to seeing you there!
SUNDAY SERVICE at 10:30am
Experience the uplifting sounds of traditional hymnal music during our Sunday service. While you worship, your children can participate in our engaging children’s church session located in our nursery.
MONDAY SERVICE at 7:00pm
We understand that weekends are no longer as relaxing as they used to be. With sports and work extending into the weekend, we have recognized the need to extend our worship opportunities. Monday night is a time to come and relax, and to give thanks to God for all that he has given us. Our Monday night service offers a blend of contemporary and traditional music.
Our Beliefs
Who are United Methodists?
The United Methodist Church is a global denomination that opens hearts, opens minds and opens doors through active engagement with our world. The mission of The United Methodist Church is to make disciples of Jesus Christ for the transformation of the world.
A United Methodist is someone who joins in that mission by putting faith and love into action. We believe that God loves all people, and that we share in expressing that love. So the United Methodist tradition emphasizes God’s grace and in serving others. We believe that Jesus Christ is the fullest expression of God’s love–showing us the fullness of God’s care through Jesus’ teachings, death and resurrection.
John Wesley started the Methodist movement in 18th century England. His teachings on practical divinity (living out our faith) and appeals to reason and experience form important aspects of United Methodist practice today.
Our foundation of our faith.
God
We believe in the one true, holy and living God, Eternal Spirit, who is Creator, Sovereign and Preserver of all things visible and invisible. He is infinite in power, wisdom, justice, goodness and love, and rules with gracious regard for the well-being and salvation of men, to the glory of his name. We believe the one God reveals himself as the Trinity: Father, Son and Holy Spirit, distinct but inseparable, eternally one in essence and power.
Jesus Christ
We believe in Jesus Christ, truly God and truly man, in whom the divine and human natures are perfectly and inseparably united. He is the eternal Word made flesh, the only begotten Son of the Father, born of the Virgin Mary by the power of the Holy Spirit. As ministering Servant he lived, suffered and died on the cross. He was buried, rose from the dead and ascended into heaven to be with the Father, from whence he shall return. He is eternal Savior and Mediator, who intercedes for us, and by him all men will be judged.
Holy Spirit
We believe in the Holy Spirit who proceeds from and is one in being with the Father and the Son. He convinces the world of sin, of righteousness and of judgment. He leads men through faithful response to the gospel into the fellowship of the Church. He comforts, sustains and empowers the faithful and guides them into all truth.
The Bible
We believe the Holy Bible, Old and New Testaments, reveals the Word of God so far as it is necessary for our salvation. It is to be received through the Holy Spirit as the true rule and guide for faith and practice. Whatever is not revealed in or established by the Holy Scriptures is not to be made an article of faith nor is it to be taught as essential to salvation.
Human Beings & Free Will
We believe man is fallen from righteousness and, apart from the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, is destitute of holiness and inclined to evil. Except a man be born again, he cannot see the Kingdom of God. In his own strength, without divine grace, man cannot do good works pleasing and acceptable to God. We believe, however, man influenced and empowered by the Holy Spirit is responsible in freedom to exercise his will for good.
Salvation
We believe we are never accounted righteous before God through our works or merit, but that penitent sinners are justified or accounted righteous before God only by faith in our Lord Jesus Christ.
We believe regeneration is the renewal of man in righteousness through Jesus Christ, by the power of the Holy Spirit, whereby we are made partakers of the divine nature and experience newness of life. By this new birth the believer becomes reconciled to God and is enabled to serve him with the will and the affections. We believe, although we have experienced regeneration, it is possible to depart from grace and fall into sin; and we may even then, by the grace of God, be renewed in righteousness.
The Church
We believe the Christian Church is the community of all true believers under the Lordship of Christ. We believe it is one, holy, apostolic and catholic (universal). It is the redemptive fellowship in which the Word of God is preached by men divinely called, and the sacraments are duly administered according to Christ’s own appointment. Under the discipline of the Holy Spirit the Church exists for the maintenance of worship, the edification of believers and the redemption of the world.
Communion & Baptism
We believe the Sacraments, ordained by Christ, are symbols and pledges of the Christian’s profession and of God’s love toward us. They are means of grace by which God works invisibly in us, quickening, strengthening and confirming our faith in him. Two Sacraments are ordained by Christ our Lord, namely Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
We believe Baptism signifies entrance into the household of faith, and is a symbol of repentance and inner cleansing from sin, a representation of the new birth in Christ Jesus and a mark of Christian discipleship.
We believe children are under the atonement of Christ and as heirs of the Kingdom of God are acceptable subjects for Christian Baptism. Children of believing parents through Baptism become the special responsibility of the Church. They should be nurtured and led to personal acceptance of Christ, and by profession of faith confirm their Baptism.
We believe the Lord’s Supper is a representation of our redemption, a memorial of the sufferings and death of Christ, and a token of love and union which Christians have with Christ and with one another. Those who rightly, worthily and in faith eat the broken bread and drink the blessed cup partake of the body and blood of Christ in a spiritual manner until he comes.
